National union of students
The National Union of Students (NUS) is the so-called 'peak representative body' for tertiary education students in Australia. The organisation was founded in 1987 after the collapse of its predecessor the Australian Union of Students (AUS) in 1984, and operates out of Melbourne with financial support from affiliated campus student unions / representative councils.
Grassroots Left maintains a small but important presence at the NUS National Conference (NatCon) held every year in December and Education Conference (EdCon) held in July, as well as participating in NUS-initiated campaigns such as National Days of Action. Contemporary NUS is dominated by the Labor factions, NLS (labor left) and Student Unity (labor right), as well as Socialist Alternative and the National Independents. Despite the level of bureaucracy and petty factionalism inherent in NUS, Grassroots sees the importance in having a national union of students and will put up important policy and elect committed activists into office-bearer positions. Below is a list of GL NUS office-bearers for 2015, along with contact information: |
